Monhegan Island, about an hour off the coast of Portland, Maine, is a bit of a place that time forgot. No cars other than the pickups to carry luggage to and from the ferries. Dirt lanes and a few seafood eateries. Wonderful cliff hikes around rocky shores. It’s been a painters’ paradise for at least a century. The lighthouse, its spiritual center, shines out warnings to ships that approach. “Monhegan Light” refers to the old lighthouse itself, the special light that illuminates every spot one looks to and the hearts of those who do the looking.
