I was snapping photos of horses and their riders during a dressage competition, and I noticed three of the judges walking around taking notes. Since I'm a portrait artist as well as an equine artist, I decided to paint them in pastel. My goal was to capture their gestures and facial expressions. As soon as I started drawing these three guys, I knew this was gonna be something special. The colors in the photo were bland and offered me nothing to work with. So I decided to just play with color to see what would happen. After laying down the drawing with charcoal, I drew their faces with green Nupastels. Then I exaggerated all the colors that I knew were there, and I continued to work loosely and expressively on their bodies and the background.
