The End Of The Road—literally and figuratively—this piece was inspired by the experience of living through the eruption of Kilauea volcano in 2018. The largest eruption in over 200 years, the volcano destroyed hundreds of homes—including my own—covered many miles of roads, and over 13,000 acres of land with barren lava flows. The painting is on Hand Book Paper Co Pastel Premier Sanded Pastel Paper 400 grit. An underpainting of granulating blue-black watercolor in the top section provided the underlying texture for the lava. I then used Unison pastels, Caran D’Ache pastel pencils and Caran D’Ache pastel cubes.
