This painting was born from anger about how our society has institutionalized white male privilege into all aspects of our lives including our games, entertainment, and even our language. It is full of symbolism ranging from the meaning of the flowers chosen to the color of back ground and, of course, the use of specific chess pieces which themselves have a long symbolic history. It was inspired by my own life experiences of rape and being silenced through intimidation and by a story of abduction, abuse, and dehumanizing humiliation a co-worked experienced as a teen. I used Sennelier and Rembrandt soft pastels on black Sennelier pastel card.
