"Turnin' and Burnin'" is a 22" x 17" pastel painting on Colourfix sanded paper. Bill Lay, the subject of my painting, has been in inspiration to me for many years. At 89, he's still a young cowboy at heart. Even though he's had many health problems, he still barrel races and rides for pleasure. He total adores his two horses, and they're his greatest joys in life. I approached this painting in my usual way: I sketched the drawing directly onto the substrate with a charcoal pencil, and then added Nupastels Art Spectrum, Blue Earth, and Great American Artworks soft pastels for light and color. I kept some areas soft and others I approached in a much harder graphic way to show contrast. I also pushed the colors to bring excitement to the composition.
